THE NEW NEW CURIOSITY SHOPPE -- HAUNTED LOVE
2ND PLACE: "Forever My Love" by Heather Gregson
Another haunting entry with a melancholy twist our judges loved. Editors
I look into her eyes. There is a sad distance to them, but she loves me, it’s there in her eyes. I don’t know why she’s so sad -- we’re finally together. How many times have we looked into each others eyes, seen the love we feel for each other reflected back, only to be pulled back to our own worlds? Now we're together.
I touch her skin, flawless and perfect. Her hair laces through my fingers like silken tendrils. And still, she looks forlorn. I press my hand to her face, the gentle curve of her jawline cupped in my calloused hand. “Don’t be sad, we’re together now."
“But for how long?” she asks.
“Forever. I’ll never leave you. Do you remember the first time we saw each other?”
“Of course. You were so tired, you'd worked for twenty-eight hours straight."
“I thought I was seeing things. You were the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen and will ever see. How could something so beautiful be real? But you are real, and now we have forever.”
“I loved watching you work. I used to hide close by and watch you for hours. I used to hope that you'd see me. And then, that day, I knew you had. You looked at me and my heart stopped. It felt as if you had looked into my very soul." She presses her hand to her heart.
“I know, you'd done the same to me. So why then, my love, why are you so sad?” I fear the answer, but have to know.
“Because you’re dying,” she says, her voice a thin whisper.
I look up, the inky blackness of the ocean is enveloping me. My lungs are screaming for air, but I can’t leave her. My love and I are finally together.
I reach for her. She grabs my hand and pulls me close to her.
“I love you, my mermaid.”
“And I love you, my fisherman. Now go.” She pushes me upward, toward the surface.
I struggle against the wall of water pushing me down. I can see my love, she's disappearing into the darkness. I can’t let her go. How can I leave her, even if it's to save my own life? I breathe deep -- the cold water fills my lungs. My eyes go as black as the cold, deep, ocean entombing me and I give up the fight.
My beautiful mermaid races up to me, but she's too late. “I will love you from this life to the next,” she says, embracing me. She reaches into my boot, pulls my knife from it’s sheath, and plunges it into her heart.
Together, we spiral into the dark abyss below.
